But choosing a topic to write about might not have been the easiest decision. The reason being, you’re likely passionate about a variety of things. And that can make it hard to choose one single thing to focus on with your blog.
In all my years of blogging, I’ve had so many people reach out to me with this problem. They send over an email saying that they want to write about X, Y, and Z. The problem is, those topics aren’t related to each other at all. And, they’d even attract an audience that was all over the place.
While I appreciate the enthusiasm of these aspiring bloggers, covering multiple topics could potentially set you up for disaster. That’s why I think it’s so important we discuss the power of narrowing your focus as a blogger.
Why You Need a Clear Focus
You might be wondering why you need to narrow your focus at all. And I get it! I mean, wouldn’t you attract more readers by writing about multiple topics?
Maybe. But that’s not necessarily a good thing.
Many bloggers get tempted to write about everything under the sun. And the truth is, if you’re trying to attract a specific type of person (and you should be), you need to work on narrowing your focus as a blogger. By writing about topics that attract all different kinds of people, your content won’t speak directly to that one person you want to target. And when you have a product or service to offer, they’ll be less likely to buy because it isn’t what they need.
This all goes back to knowing your target market. It should serve as a reminder why you need to be crystal clear on who your ideal reader is. Because your blog content is going to be so much more powerful when you focus on that one type of person you want to read your site. That person will feel like you’re reading her mind. And everything you do is going to resonate with her.
The Two Key Factors Your Blog Needs
There are two key factors that I believe every successful blog needs. Passion and profitability.
When you’re narrowing your focus as a blogger, I want you to consider those two things. That’s what will help you achieve the best long-term results.
First, passion is essential. If you aren’t passionate about the topic you’ve chosen, you’ll burn out quickly. And it’ll show in your writing. When you ooze with passion, people pick up on that and they really resonate with it. Profitability is important if you ever hope to make money with your blog. The idea you choose needs to be something you can actually turn a profit with. Think about the types of offerings you could create with the focus you choose before committing to it.
Tips for Narrowing Your Focus as a Blogger
My advice to bloggers is to choose three to five main categories they want to cover on their blogs. Each one of those categories should fall under one larger umbrella because everything needs to tie together in order for it to make sense.
By narrowing your focus as a blogger and sticking to those topics, you’ll start to build authority within you niche. And your readers will know exactly what to expect from you.
For example, if you take a look at my site, all of my main categories go hand-in-hand. I write about blogging, business, social media, and personal development (with entrepreneurs in mind). Overall, everything flows to help people build successful online businesses.
To help you get clear on what your blog offers, answer these questions:
- How many topics are you covering on your blog?
- If you’re writing about more than five things, how can you narrow it down?
- Are there any topics that you no longer feel passionate about? If so, delete all of those categories from your blog. Don’t worry, the posts will still be there!
- Are there any categories that have five or fewer posts? Consider whether or not you want to continue writing about these topics. If not, delete them!
And let’s talk about those topics you love to write about:
- Are there any topics you want to talk about on your blog, but haven’t written about yet?
- If you’re unsure what to write about, consider the following: What are you most passionate about? What topics do you have an endless supply of ideas for? What topics do people ask you for advice on?
- Take in all of this information to help you narrow down your blog’s focus to three to five topics you love.
Remember! Think about your target market. Are you providing them with the content that will attract them to your site and make them fall in love with you? Are you solving their problems or adding value to their lives? You want to make sure your blog is providing that to them consistently.
