It’s easy to get sucked into Pinterest and spend way too much time repinning everything that catches your eye.
However, if you’re using Pinterest for your business, you want to be strategic about the boards you’re creating and the content you’re sharing.
How to Optimize Pinterest for Your Business
As a business owner, any time you spend on social media should serve a purpose. Whether you’re sharing valuable content for your audience or engaging in conversation with them, it’s all important.
And when it comes to Pinterest, you want to make sure you’re building a presence that will appeal to your target audience. You want to give people a reason to click that follow button and share your content. So, here are a few tips to help you optimize Pinterest for your business:
Choose a Business Account
The first thing you want to do is setup a business account with Pinterest if you haven’t already. Because it’s free, there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t make the switch.
Having a business account provides you with access to additional features, such as Pinterest analytics and Promoted Pins.
By having access to analytics, you’ll be able to learn so much about your audience. You’ll gain a better understanding of the kind of content they enjoy the most. Plus, you’ll be able to see which pins and boards are the most popular, how many clicks you’re getting, and more.
Add Rich Pins for Your Website
Another feature you’ll want to take advantage of is Pinterest’s Rich Pins. If you aren’t familiar with this, that’s okay. You’ve probably noticed this feature before, but simply didn’t know what it was.
Rich Pins is a great feature to take advantage of when using Pinterest for your business because of the additional information it provides.
They display your website’s name, the favicon for your site, and the meta description of the blog post you’ve linked to.
Although there’s no data that says Rich Pins perform better than those that aren’t, it’s still wise to set it up. It looks professional and presents users with a snippet of your content before clicking through due to the meta description.

Create Boards That Add Value
Will the boards on your Pinterest account help you attract your ideal audience? If not, then it’s time to make a change! When using Pinterest for your business, you want to make sure you’re giving your audience exactly what they want to see.
To do this, create multiple boards that add value by delivering the content they want to see.
You can get as broad or as specific as you want with this. For someone like me, a “Social Media Marketing” board makes a lot of sense for my audience. However, someone who works as a social media manager might want to break those boards down into individual platforms.
If you want to use Pinterest for your personal use as well, consider what your audience will want to see. If they aren’t going to be interested in your DIY pins, create a secret board for this content instead of having a separate account.
Also, make sure you assign descriptive names to all of your boards. When someone stumbles upon your profile, you want them to be able to clearly tell what each board is about.
Pin New Posts Regularly
You probably don’t need another excuse to spend more time on Pinterest, but I’m giving you permission to do that right now.
To optimize Pinterest for your business, my advice is to pin at least 10 pieces of new content each day. These pins should be a mix of content from your site, as well as other sources.
When you’re pinning content, there will be times when something fits on multiple boards. Don’t be afraid to pin it to every relevant board for maximum mileage.

Utilize Keywords Throughout Your Profile
Keywords are obviously important to use within your blog posts for SEO purposes. The same goes for content on Pinterest. And there are a number of ways you can incorporate keywords in your profile.
First, you should consider adding keywords to your display name. Many Pinterest experts have said this is a great way to show up in search results. For example, my Pinterest display name shows the following: . It tells people exactly the kind of content they’ll find on my profile.
Keywords can also be used in your captions by writing longer, informative descriptions. This helps your content be discovered by the right people.
And finally, it’s a good idea to use descriptive, SEO-friendly keywords for your board titles. “Tasty Treats” is certainly a cute name for your dessert board, but it’s not ideal for SEO. Instead, get descriptive with something like, “Gluten-Free Desserts.”
Join Group Boards
If you aren’t already a member of a few group boards, make it your priority to join some today. This is one of the best ways to use Pinterest for your business because you’ll be able to reach a wider audience.
The key thing to remember when selecting boards is to join ones that are relevant to your niche. These boards should be something your target audience would be interested in following so they can discover you.
Some Pinterest group boards have rules about what’s acceptable to post and what’s not. If you’re going to use them, make sure you abide by those. And if you’re allowed to post your own content, do so sparingly. Make sure you balance it with curated content as well.
